Award-winning author of more than thirty trend-setting books for popular as well as professional audiences, Dr. John C. Avise is credited with launching one of the major scientific revolutions in the late 20th century. His groundbreaking work, using molecular genetic techniques to examine crucial ecological and evolutionary questions, has pioneered an integration of these previously separate disciplines. Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Avise is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Ornithological Union, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Pew Program in Marine Conservation. He has been President of three leading scientific organizations. His major academic distinctions also include the Caesar Kleberg Foundation Medal for Wildlife Conservation, the Brewster Memorial Award for scientific contributions to ornithology, the American Genetic Association’s Wilhelmine Key Award, the Alfred Russel Wallace Award from the International Biogeography Society, and the international Molecular Ecology Prize for career contributions to molecular ecology.
